Are you a fan of Sarah Brightman ? Whether you answer “Yes” or “No” to the question, it doesn’t matter. Just scroll down. Get the excitement rolling because we have The Next Sarah Brightman. :-)

Yes, that’s right! A fifteen year old girl from Medan, Putri Ayu Silaen, has been declared by many, including David Foster, to have all the potential to be the successor of Sarah Brightman.

I’ve been having goosebumps and shedding tear in both happiness and admiration when listening to this wonderful treasure. Her voice? It’s sublimed with divine accuracy and subtle and refined phrasing. :-)

For me personally having Putri Ayu in this post is not only about celebrating the presence of an extremely talented singer. It’s also about nationalism. It’s about placing Indonesia in the global map. Nationalism?  Duh uh?

Here’s the story. Apart from Anggun C Sasmi, an Indonesian born singer who has just represented France in Eurovision 2012, there has been no Indonesian singer/band who has their name with an international record label. Not Agnes Monica. Not Dewa 19. Not even my all-time favorites Benyamin Sueb and Bang Haji Rhoma Irama.

The thing is many Indonesians are not confident that they can achieve great things in life and leave a legacy to the world and humanity. As Pramoedya Ananta Toer shrewdly observed, an acute inferiority has been severely damaging the mentality of the people, a subtle yet deep and most distinctive remnant of the colonial era.

But Putri Ayu is different. She dreams of having an international career in the music industry and of singing with Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli in a big concert. She wants to prove it to the world that we don’t love being mediocre.

I’ve been praying for her to pave the success for Indonesia. The advancement of a country is reflected through the achievements of the individuals. A great nation consists of great people. And great people are a compilation of great individuals.

I have great expectations that Putri Ayu will remarkably carve her path of international success in the music industry. I wish her the very best of luck in pursuing her dream.

After all, “It is the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting” -Paulo Coelho. Would you agree?

And here’s a video of her singing “Time to Say Goodbye”. Enjoy! :-)

  2. Good that you are highlighting other aspects of Indonesia such as Putri Ayu’s talent.

I have been visiting Indonesia regularly since 1981 – in fact during the 1990s I was there every month. The international media focus’ on harsh reports – but regular visitors like me know that Indonesia is a rich cultural treasure trove.

    • Thank you, Cik. I really appreciate your comment. Yes, you’re right. We have to believe that we have rich culture and be proud of it. Thank you again, lovely day to you! :-)
